An eco-friendly family have reduced their household waste so much they have only filled one bin of rubbish – in a year.
The Strauss family throw away an average of just 50g of litter every week – enough to fit in the palm of a hand.
They make use of all their leftovers so crisp bags and cellophane wrappers ar about the only things that they throw away
Rachelle, husband Richard and daughter Verona, eight, from Longhope, Gloucestershire, last had their refuse bin collected at the beginning of January.
Since then, they have recycled wherever possible, composted leftover food, and bought produce direct from local farmers to avoid using packaging.
The family, from Longhope, Gloucestershire, take their own containers to their butcher to avoid unnecessary wrapping and grow fresh fruit and vegetables.
Tomorrow they will have completed their challenge of filling the bin just once this year – and now aim to throw away nothing at all in 2010.
